IBUG your life at Crime Show!

Crime Show, sorry...Crimmitschau was the 'City of a 100 chimmneys' at the beginning of the 20th Century, and was one of the major textile industries centre in Saxony. As the factories were closed down in 1990, they stood, abandoned and desolate. Till this week.
This week they became the site for a innovative and interesting art show called IBUG- an Urban Culture Festival that is a laboratory for urban artists. Confused? let me explain....

The walls of abandoned factories offer not just a large canvas but also an incredible atmosphere for legal Grafitti and Wall Art. These sites, once bustling and noisy hold forgotten stories of hope and despair. So IBUG invites a group of international artists every year to take over unused industrial locations in Germany and turn it7them into giant, massive, living and breathing art works. These buildings are to be torn down eventually, so the art work is temporary. But magnificent all the same.

For 2014 a former cloth mill of the Brothers Fau, a leather factory and a textiles museum were picked as the massive canvas.

Take a look at the site at http://www.ibug-art.de/en/konzept/
and if you are reading this today (29.08.14) consider heading there tomorrow for a Hip Hop Jam on Areal Schützenplatz at 9 pm. The music develops along with the art. Be surprised!

And oh yes, in the morning walk with us :)

So what's a little rain?

We had a great group today. Fifteen guests, from all over the world and they came together to enjoy Dresden. Of course the Stadtfest was a surprise for many and only added to the pleasure of being here. It was the icing on the cake so to speak :)

We do the walk even if we have one guest, that's the Dresden Walks promise. And such a tour has an easy, intimate and informal quality to it. But larger groups have their own charm and can be fun and lively because of the diversity they bring. Todays tour was one such. It was magical because the group members got along with each other like a house on fire! At times such as these the tour transforms itself into a exercise of joy where we discover Dresden together.

Of course it rained a bit, it was so predicted. But umbrellas were shared, shelter sought out and waited under till the rain lasted, stories about Dresden told to make the waiting easier and before we knew it the sun was out again and we could complete the walk.

Dresden is great with the Stadtfest and will remain glorious even after its wrapped up. Not booked your tickets to Dresden yet? Not booked the tour? Well...what are you waiting for!!

Stadtfest Dresden 2014

Dresden will put on its most festive and glorious face for the upcoming 'Stadtfest' or City Festival that will take place from the 15th to the 17th August this year. This is the 16th such festival and is dedicated this year to the famous painter Canaletto who lived and painted in Dresden. Over the years the festival has become a much looked forward to event in the region drawing an incredible number of visitors to the city.

There will be artists, musicians and performers along with a variety of food stalls and shopping. What makes it unique and interesting is that this is spread out over the city and not contained in one area.

Visiting Dresden this week? No fear. You can do the normal Dresden Walks tour in spite of the festival. Our tours will take place as usual and will start at the usual meeting place at Schloss Platz. The only difference is that you may need to look a bit harder for our sign in the midst of the crowds. Alternatively you can visit our website and book your tour or let us know you are coming so that we look out for you too.

See you at the 16th Dresden City Celebrations!

Soup up your tour Soup-erb ly!

The Dresden Walks tour in the German language begins at 10:30 am and finishes a little after noon. Just the time for a small something- to- eat right? I discovered just the place the other day. Not a big meal, not cakes and bread, no pizza and burgers. Don't get me wrong, I love the saxon cakes and brötchen (rolls) but on a holiday you want to eat healthy as well and not just fast food or big meals. And this is just the place to do so.

It is called 'Soup-erb' and as the name suggests is a place that serves soups. Hearty, healthy and simple soups that warm and fill one, served with slices of crusty bread. There is also a small selection of salads and desserts. It can be found on Rampishe Strasse. Just ask your Dresden Walks Guide to point you to it at the end of the tour as most of our tours usually end at, or near, the Church of Our Lady (The Frauenkirche)

And if you do the Dresden Walks tour ending just before 2:00 pm, head there anyway. Walking sure works up an appetite!

Look out for another recommendation next week. Pure gluttony coming up :) :)
